Origin of marine invertebrate larvae on an Arctic inflow shelf

چکیده

Many benthic invertebrate taxa possess planktonic early life stages which drift with water currents and contribute to dispersal of the species, sometimes reaching areas beyond current ranges adults. Until recently, it had been difficult identify larvae species level due lack distinguishing features, preventing detection expatriate species. Here, we used DNA metabarcoding COI gene obtain species-level identification invertebrates in zooplankton samples from Barents Sea around Svalbard, where, regionally, large volumes warm Atlantic Water enter Arctic south. We compared larval community column adult on seafloor mismatches. In addition, implemented particle tracking analysis possible origin larvae. Our results show that 30-45% taxa—largely polychaetes nudibranchs—were not local sampling area, though most were found nearby Sea. analysis, some originating along Norwegian coast capable northwest Svalbard within 3 mo, but east a more constrained area did extend coast. This study highlights largely regional-scale connectivity demonstrates potential for long-lived travel further

Size-specific predation on marine invertebrate larvae.

Predation on planktonic larval stages is frequently a major source of mortality for the offspring of benthic marine invertebrates. Mortality rate likely varies with larval size and developmental stage, but few experiments have measured how these factors affect predation rates. I used experimental reductions in egg size to test how variation in larval size affects the likelihood of predation dur...

Video tracking of marine invertebrate larvae

The tropical barnacle, Balanus amphitrite, is an economically important fouling species (it settles on natural and artificial submerged surfaces) with a short generation time and larvae that are relatively easy to culture in the laboratory. These attributes have contributed to its acceptance as a model species for larval settlement studies. The settlement stage larva the cyprid (figure 1) measu...

Chronic Effects of Coated Silver Nanoparticles on Marine Invertebrate Larvae: A Proof of Concept Study

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, have become increasingly popular in consumer products. However, data on their potential biological effects on marine organisms, especially invertebrates, remain very limited. This proof of principle study reports the chronic sub-lethal toxicity of two coated AgNPs (oleic acid coated AgNPs and polyvinylpyrrolid...

Evolution of the Arctic Calanus complex: an Arctic marine avocado?

Before man hunted the large baleen whales to near extinction by the end of the nineteenth century, Arctic ecosystems were strongly influenced by these large predators. Their main prey were zooplankton, among which the calanoid copepod species of the genus Calanus, long considered key elements of polar marine ecosystems, are particularly abundant. These herbivorous zooplankters display a range o...
